Report: Man Utd’s transfer could come as blow to Spurs’ pursuit of 24-year-old

Foot Mercato have revealed that Tyrell Malacia’s move to Manchester United could lead to Tottenham having increased competition for Villarreal left-back Pervis Estupinan this summer.

Estupinan has emerged as one of the most promising left-backs in La Liga since his move from Watford to Villarreal two years ago.

Marca reported last week that Unai Emery’s men had decided to cash in on the Ecuador international as they had to raise funds after missing out on Champions League qualification.

The report stated that Spurs were leading the race for Estupinan, and this was backed up by El Periodico Mediterraneo (28/06/22 via Sport Witness), who claimed that Antonio Conte had personally requested the 24-year-old to be signed.

Foot Mercato have now explained that Lyon were originally targeting Malacia this summer but with the Dutchman completing a move to Old Trafford, the Ligue 1 club have now set their sights on Estupinan.

The report claims that Peter Bosz’s men are keen on snapping up the Villarreal star while fellow French side Nice have also expressed an interest in the player, and have even spoken to the left-back’s representatives.

Estupinan does not offer enough going forward to play as a left wing-back in Conte’s system, and that position is now well covered with Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon.

So, if Spurs were interested in Estupinan, they were probably eyeing him as an option for the left centre-back role. However, with Lenglet now looking set to join, our interest in the Ecuadorian would have likely ended.
