According to the print edition of Record (04/05/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), Ruben Amorim has asked Tottenham target Manuel Ugarte to remain at Sporting Lisbon for one more year.
The report states that Amorim has told Ugarte to continue at the club for the 2023-24 season and make a big move next summer instead as the coach believes the player is crucial to the team.
However, it is explained that the interest in the midfielder is continuing to grow and that his agent is expected to have ‘busy days’ soon.
In fact, Ugarte’s representative, Jorge Chijane, is expected to arrive in Lisbon next week to discuss his client’s future and talk about the various ‘market solutions’.
The report adds that Spurs are one of the clubs who have ‘promised’ to ‘materialise intentions’ for the Uruguay international this summer but it is said that the player’s €60m (£52.4m) release clause is considered excessive by the North London club.

Amorim might have asked Ugarte to stay at Sporting for one more season but the interesting sub-plot to this is the fact that Amorim himself is rumoured to be a target for Spurs.
If the Portuguese coach is appointed as Tottenham’s next head coach, one can expect Ugarte to follow him to N17.
