Report: Manager may travel to London to persuade Spurs about centre-back

TyC Sports have revealed that Argentina Under-23 manager Javier Mascherano is set to meet with Tottenham officials in an effort to persuade the club to release Cristian Romero for the Olympic games.

Romero confessed last month that he would love to be part of Argentina’s World Cup squad for this summer if he is selected (The Standard).

While an Under-23 squad will compete in the Olympic games, teams are allowed to name three players over the age of 23, and it has now been suggested that Romero could be one of those three.

Cristian Romero’s busy summer plans

The centre-back will be part of Argentina’s squad for Copa America which will take place between June 10th and July 14th.

If he is selected for the Olympics, which will start on July 26th, he could potentially go straight to France, thus potentially missing pre-season as well as the start of Tottenham’s 2024-25 campaign.

TyC Sports now say that Mascherano wants to take one senior centre-back with him to the Olympics, with the former Barcelona man expected to name one of Romero or Nicolas Otamendi in the squad.

It is alleged that the 39-year-old will make a trip to Europe to chat with both Spurs and Benfica about the availability of their players.

The report explains Mascherano will try to use the players’ desire to appeal to the clubs and he will also have discussions with both Romero and Otamendi to find out ‘if they can negotiate’ with their respective clubs.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham would have seriously considered releasing Romero for the Olympics if he was not also competing in the Cope America this summer.

It would make no sense for Spurs to allow such an important asset to play in two summer tournaments and barely have any rest, which would increase the likelihood of muscle injuries for the centre-back next season.
