Report: Matt Doherty set to follow Djed Spence out of Spurs on loan

Matt Doherty is set to head out of the Tottenham Hotspur exit on transfer deadline day by completing a loan switch to Atletico Madrid, according to Spanish reporter Matteo Moretto.

With Tottenham set to wrap up the arrival of Pedro Porro after a transfer saga with Sporting Lisbon which has dragged on for the past few days, Tottenham’s options at right-back have been significantly improved with the capture of the Spanish international.

Fellow right-wing back Djed Spence was reportedly also the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid, but opted to make the switch to Stade Rennais instead to give himself the best opportunity of regular first-team football (Evening Standard).

With Doherty being a non-homegrown player and Tottenham needing to make moves to meet their quota, some will be surprised that the Republic of Ireland international is heading out of the door instead of Emerson Royal.

Doherty is able to cover on the left side of defence and certainly offers more going forward than the Brazilian.
