Tottenham Hotspur are more than familiar with Ajax and their young side from the Champions League this season.
Spurs were 3-0 down to the Dutch outfit with just 45 minutes left to play in Amsterdam before Lucas Moura scored a second-half hat-trick to book the Lilywhites a spot in the final of the competition.
Before this, Ajax captain and 19-year-old central defender Matthijs de Ligt has headed his club into the lead on the night, and 2-0 up on aggregate.
De Ligt is rated as one of the very best young centre backs in world football right now, and is a highly sought after player this transfer window, with Tottenham said to be interested in his signature (Daily Star).
With Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld both in their 30s and both coming towards the end of their current contracts, Spurs must now look to the future.
However, The Times now claim that De Ligt would prefer to follow in the footsteps of Frenkie De Jong and move to La Liga by joining Barcelona.
Spurs Web Opinion:
The main difference between De Jong and De Ligt is that the former has already left Ajax, while the latter is still under contract at the Dutch giants. While this is the case, Tottenham should absolutely put in a bid for the defender to test the water. Not only would this give them a chance of signing the player, but it would also make a big statement regarding what they are about this transfer window. Replacing Jan and Toby will be near impossible, and Spurs will have to invest big if they want a defender of that calibre. De Ligt is the perfect player to fit the bill, so pull out your wallet Daniel Levy.
