Report: Midfielder agrees to leave club in January amid rumoured Tottenham interest

Spanish news outlet Sport have claimed that Philippe Coutinho has made it clear to Barcelona that he wants to leave the club this summer amid rumoured interest from Tottenham.

Coutinho was linked with a move to Spurs during the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materialise for the midfielder.

The former Liverpool man has once again struggled for minutes at Camp Nou this season and Tottenham have been backed to reignite their interest in signing him this month.

Sport have revealed that Coutinho realises that he is surplus to requirements at the Catalan giants and wants to return to the Premier League.

The report suggests that Spurs face competition for the 29-year-old’s signature from their North London rivals Arsenal.

However, it is explained that Coutinho’s high salary is ‘not helping the operation’, with Barcelona making interested parties aware that they will have to help as best they can with the wage issue.

It is suggested that a loan move away from the club may be ‘the most likely option’ for the Brazilian international.

A loan move with an option to buy Coutinho at the end of the season would be a relatively risk-free option but it remains to be seen if Barca would agree to that.

The Catalan giants would also have to agree to pay the majority of the midfielder’s £380,000 per week salary for a move to Spurs to be feasible.
