Report: Midfielder completed medical with Barcelona before Spurs hijacked the deal

Fussball.News have revealed that Barcelona came much closer to securing Lucas Bergvall’s signature than it was previously thought, with the midfielder even having a medical at Camp Nou before Tottenham swooped for him.

Various sources from Spain have covered in detail over the past week the circumstances that led to Tottenham beating Barcelona for Bergvall’s signature on transfer deadline day.

According to some journalists, the Lilywhites not only offered more money than the La Liga giants but also promised the 18-year-old that he would go straight into their first team (Matteo Moretto).

Barcelona president Johan Laporte insisted last week that it was simply a case of Spurs offering a better pay package which is why the teenager chose to move to North London (The Athletic).

However, this claim was rubbished by Djurgarden’s sports coordinator Peter Kisfaludy, who told Football.London a couple of days ago that the youngster just had a better feeling about the Tottenham project.

The official explained that the midfielder’s conversations with Ange Postecoglou and his international teammate Dejan Kulusevski also played a role in his eventual decision.

Bergvall came really close to Barca move

Fussball.News have now explained that Bergvall was on the verge of joining Barcelona, with pretty much all the details being wrapped up leading into the final week of the January window.

The Swede had allegedly undergone a medical at the Catalan club and even had ‘intensive discussions’ with those in charge at Nou Cap.

However, his plans completely changed when Xavi Hernandez made a surprise announcement that he would be exiting Barcelona at the end of the season.

That is when Tottenham ‘suddenly intervened’ and were able to convince Bergvall that the project underway at N17 would be the ideal fit for him.

It sounds like another Willian situation but with Spurs this time being the beneficiaries. The timing of Xavi’s announcement certainly did not do Barcelona any favours and it seemingly played right into Tottneham’s hands in the race for Bergvall’s signature.
