Report: Midfielder linked with Spurs has release clause of £52m but may cost just £26m

Sport have now become the latest publication to talk up the chances of Tottenham making a move for Real Sociedad star Brais Mendez in January.

The versatile Mendez, who can operate in a variety of roles in midfield as well as out-wide, has had a fantastic start to the new season, with five goals and six assists across all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).

We relayed a report from Fichajes.net a couple of days ago, which suggested that Tottenham are keeping a close eye on the Spain international head of the January transfer window.

The report alleged that Ange Postecoglou is an admirer of the midfielder and that the Spaniard could be tempted by a switch to the Premier League.

Spurs may have to pay £52m to land Brais Mendez

Sport have now backed up that information, stating that Tottenham hold a ‘strong interest’ in the Real Sociedad star.

In fact, the publication adds that the Lilywhites are now considering preparing ‘an important offer’ for Mendes in January.

It is explained that the midfielder has a release clause of €60m (£52m) but his market value is projected to be closer to €30m (£26m).

Spurs Web Opinion

While Sociedad would certainly want well over £25m for Mendez, I do not think they would expect any club to meet the player’s release clause. An offer of around £35m-£40m might be enough the prise the midfielder away from Reale Arena in January.
