Report: Midfielder linked with Spurs in discussions over a new contract

Manchester United have reportedly triggered a one-year contract extension for midfielder Nemanja Matic, who has previously been linked with a move to Spurs.

Matic was said to be a target for the Lillywhites in the January transfer window with Jose Mourinho reported to be keen on reuniting with him in North London (Metro).

However, the Serbian ended up staying at Old Trafford and he has seen an improvement in form in the last month and a half. He has featured fairly regularly for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and has repaid his manager’s faith.

Football.London reported last month that with the 30-year-old’s contract running out in the summer, Tottenham could try and sign him on a free transfer.

However, Sky Sports have now confirmed that the Red Devils have triggered the one-year option in Matic’s contract.

They are also said to be in discussions with the former Chelsea midfielder over a new deal which could see him stay beyond the summer of 2021.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am sure most Spurs fans will breathe a huge sigh of relief hearing that Matic is likely to stay at Manchester United. While there is no doubt that we are in need of a defensive midfielder, we should certainly be looking at a more long-term option than Matic who has a couple of more years in him at best.
