Report: Midfielder turns down contract offer amid Spurs and Newcastle interest

According to Record, Manuel Ugarte has turned down Sporting Lisbon’s latest contract offer amidst interest from the likes of Tottenham.

Ugarte arrived at Sporting as a relative unknown during the summer of 2021 but he has progressed impressively, establishing himself as a mainstay in the Portuguese giants’ midfield this season.

The 21-year-old has been extremely consistent both domestically and in Europe this campaign, including two solid displays in the Champions League group stage clashes against Antonio Conte’s men.

Reports first emerged ahead of the January transfer window that Spurs were monitoring the Uruguayan’s development (A Bola).

Record have now revealed that it is not just the Lilywhites but also Newcastle United who are eyeing a potential move for Ugarte in the summer.

The report explains that amidst interest from the two Premier League clubs, the midfielder turned down Sporting’s latest contract offer, which would have seen him earn an improved salary and also pushed his release clause up from €60m (£53.2m) to €80m (£71m).

Perhaps, the likes of Spurs and Newcastle would have gotten in touch with Ugarte’s representatives about their interest, which might have been the reason the player turned down the contract extension.

However, it remains to be seen whether Tottenham will want to hold any dealings with Sporting in the near future after the Pedro Porro fiasco in January.
