Report: Mourinho believes teenager will be a different player next season

The coaching staff at Tottenham Hotspur have huge expectations of Ryan Sessegnon and believe he has the potential to be a world-beater, according to a report by Football Insider.

Things have not gone according to plan for Sessegnon in his first season in North London.

A hamstring injury prevented him from making an impact in the first few months and opportunities have been few and far between for the 19-year-old since Jose Mourinho arrived at the club.

Although the Spurs boss admitted a few months ago that he sees the former Fulham man as a wide-player who can operate from either flank (Football.London), the England Under-21 international revealed recently that he prefers playing as a wing-back or a full-back depending on the system.

Football Insider claim that Mourinho and his coaching staff are convinced that Sessegnon is going to develop into a top player.

It is said that Mourinho has been a long-time admirer of the teenager and believes he will be a completely different player with a full pre-season under his belt ahead of the next campaign.

It is also asserted that the Spurs boss primarily wants to use him in an attacking role next season on either flank.

Spurs Web Opinion

I understand why Mourinho would want Sessegnon to mature and learn his trade before using him as a defender. However, I personally think that the 19-year-old is destined to end up as a full-back in the long-term as he is doesn’t offer enough on the ball to play in a more advanced role. His pace, energy and delivery seem to be his best assets.
