Report: Mourinho blocked Tottenham’s attempts to snap up 28-year-old

The Athletic have revealed Tottenham’s attempts to sign AS Roma midfielder Jordan Veretout in January were foiled by Jose Mourinho.

There was a midfield clear out at Tottenham in January, with Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso joining Lyon and Villareal on loan respectively while Dele Alli completed a permanent transfer to Everton.

The only new addition that Spurs were able to bring in to bolster Antonio Conte’s options in the centre of the park was Rodrigo Bentancur.

Reports from Italy (Tuttosport via Sport Witness) claimed during the window that Veretout was another midfield option on Tottenham’s radar.

It was even suggested that Roma might be willing to cash in on the former Aston Villa man amidst Spurs’ interest (Il Messaggero).

The Athletic have now revealed that the North Londoners did make an enquiry for Veretout, who is allegedly admired by Conte.

However, it is asserted that Mourinho had no desire to let the Frenchman leave the Stadio Olimpico mid-season.

This is one reason why it is really hard to do business in January as most clubs are not willing to get their players to leave mid-season.

Considering how the likes of Man Utd, Arsenal and West Ham fared in the window, Paratici did quite well to get deals for Kulusevski and Bentancur over the line.
