Report: Mourinho contacts Real Madrid over potential defender deal

Jose Mourinho is keen on recruiting Real Madrid central defender Eder Militao to Spurs, according to reports from Spain.

Spanish news outlet El Desmarque claim that the Spurs head coach has already contacted Madrid supremo Florentino Perez over Militao’s availability.

The 22-year-old defender signed for the Spanish giants just last summer from Porto, in a deal worth around £43.5 million (Guardian).

However, he has failed to hit the expected heights at the Santiago Bernabeu and has fallen down the pecking order.

It is suggested that Mourinho views the Brazilian as the ideal replacement for Jan Vertonghen with the Belgian’s contract in North London expiring out at the end of the season.

The report suggests that while Zinedine Zidane is ready to sanction Militao’s sale, Los Blancos want £70 million for his signature.

Mourinho is said to be hopeful of getting his former employers to lower their valuation of the youngster with the Premier League side looking to recruit a defender in the event that Vertonghen does not extend his stay at the club.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is clear that the backline seems to be Jose’s priority in the summer. I don’t think we need wholesale changes in central defence as we are fairly well stocked in the position after Japhet Tanganga’s emergence even if Vertonghen leaves. I believe we are in more desperate need of additions in both full-back areas.
