According to a report in Football Insider, new Spurs boss Jose Mourinho could decide to block any new contract offer to defender Jan Vertonghen.
The report claims that the 56-year-old is concerned about the Belgian’s injuries and wants him to prove his fitness before handing him a contract extension.
Vertonghen is one of three Tottenham stars, including Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen, whose current contracts with the club will run out at the end of this season.
While the prospects of them signing new contracts looked unlikely under Pochettino, there now seems to be a belief that a couple of them could sign new deals following Mourinho’s arrival.
Vertonghen has always insisted that he wants to stay at the club for as long as possible (The Guardian) but the new Spurs manager is reportedly concerned about the niggling injuries that the 32-year-old is picking up.
The centre half has been in and out of the team so far this season and has been sidelined with multiple injury problems.

Vertonghen has been a great servant for the club and someone who has always been Tottenham through and through. While it would be great to keep him for at least another year, it is clear that his performance levels have been dropping. Unless the 32-year-old remains fit for the second half of the season and puts in some consistent displays, it does look like his Spurs career will come to an end.
