Report: Mourinho ‘delighted’ with Ndombele’s application in recent months

A lot has been said and written about Jose Mourinho’s seemingly frosty relationship with Tanguy Ndomebele over the past few months.

The Spurs boss publicly called out the Frenchman’s lack of effort earlier this year (BBC Sport) and speculation over the midfielder’s future has run rife since then.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to Barcelona (Sky Sports) but reports indicate that he is unlikely to leave Spurs this summer (PA Sport journalist Jonathan Veal).

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has now revealed that Mourinho and his coaching staff have been delighted with the way the former Lyon man has applied himself over the last few months.

Gold also revealed that the midfielder was played in a more offensive role in the closed-door eleven vs eleven friendly at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday.

With Moussa Sissoko and Harvey White sitting deeper in midfield, the former Lyon man was given the freedom to get forward and he made it count by getting on the scoresheet.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not expect Ndombele to start the first few games as I believe Jose will go with a midfield three of Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli (in case Lo Celso is not fit). However, it does seem as if the Spurs boss wants to use the Frenchman in a more offensive position where he can hurt the opposition. I expect Ndombele to primarily be used as a super-sub off the bench in the final nine games of the season, particularly if we are chasing a game.
