Report: Mourinho has ‘earmarked a major role’ for Ryan Sessegnon next season

According to Football Insider, Jose Mourinho has big plans for Ryan Sessegnon next season and does not want the youngster to leave Tottenham this summer.

Previous reports indicated that Spurs are not in the market for a left-back this summer, with Mourinho happy for Sessegnon and Dennis Cirkin to serve as Ben Davies’ main understudies.

Football Insider now reveals that several clubs from the Premier League, as well as those around Europe, have offered to sign Sessegnon on a season-long loan but Mourinho has blocked any potential transfer.

It is claimed that the 57-year-old has told the former Fulham man that he will be staying put at Spurs and that he has big plans for him next season.

The report alleges that Mourinho not only wants the youngster to compete with Davies for the left-back spot but also believes he can be an additional attacking option higher up the pitch.

It is asserted that the Tottenham head coach sees the 20-year-old as a left-back in the future and has no doubts about his ability to become first-choice in the position for both club and country.

However, the report suggests that the youngster is likely to be used in multiple positions next season depending on the match requirements.

Spurs Web Opinion

In hindsight, the injury Sessegnon picked up in pre-season last year proved to be a big blow for the youngster as it meant that he was always behind the curve both in terms of fitness and in getting accustomed to a new style of play. Hopefully, having a full pre-season under his belt this time around will help bring the best out of him next campaign. I still believe that we will eventually have to loan the 20-year-old out to a Premier League club if he is to develop his game enough to be a starter for us. However, with reports indicating that we are unlikely to sign a left-back this summer, it looks like Jose is counting on Sessegnon for next season.
