Report: Mourinho issues stern warning to defender over his past behaviour

One of the players who seems to have benefited the most since Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Tottenham is defender Serge Aurier.

The Ivorian has started almost every game since the Portuguese manager took over at in North London has put in some terrific performances.

The new Tottenham head coach has given Aurier licence to play high up the pitch and that seems to have brought the best out of the full-back.

According to a report by Foot Mercato, the former PSG man is one of the players Mourinho has had a comprehensive one on one meeting with since his arrival.

It is alleged that the 56-year-old told Aurier that he can be one of the best right-backs in the world if he focuses on and off the pitch.

Interestingly, the report also reveals that the new Spurs boss issued a warning to the 26-year-old not to insult him on social media like he did his former manager Laurent Blanc.

The Spurs defender used a homophobic slur against the former PSG manager during a question and answer session he did on Periscope in 2016 (The Guardian).

It appears Mourinho was aware of the incident and made it clear that any such behaviour won’t be tolerated by him.

According to Foot Mercato, the Spurs head coach told the full back, “I’m not laughing. If you think you can make fun of me on social media like you could have done with your former trainer, you are wrong.”

The tone in which Mourinho said this to Aurier hasn’t been made clear in the article. I think it is highly likely that he would have said it jovially rather than as a serious point. Apart from his delivery into the box which still needs improvement, Aurier has everything in his game to be a top attacking right back.
