Report: Mourinho keen on bringing Bundesliga midfielder to Tottenham

Football Insider have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have joined in the race for Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie, ahead of the summer transfer window.

McKennie has established himself has a regular for the Gelsenkirchen outfit and has caught the eye with his performances this season.

The USA international is versatile, capable of playing a more attacking, defensive, or box to box role in the middle of the park.

The 23-year-old has also been deployed at centre-back when Schalke had an injury crisis last year.

Football Insider claim that Jose Mourinho is an admirer of the all-action midfielder and wants to bring him to Tottenham.

It is revealed that Spurs face competition from Inter Milan and Hertha Berlin for McKennie’s signature but the midfielder is thought to be keen on a move to the Premier League.

Schalke are said to be seeking a £27million fee for the Texas-born player, who still has four more years to run on his contract with the Bundesliga club.

The German side are keen to cash in amid financial trouble with a number of their best players already up for sale (CBS Sports).

Spurs Web Opinion

McKennie is a very tidy player that can certainly be a vital cog in the wheel but he is not the kind of player who is capable of dictating play in midfield. On the face of it, I would presume that the club might be looking at him as a possible alternative to Hojbjerg.

The fact that we are being linked with workman-like midfielders gives an indication of what Jose expects from his midfield players. I do not think Ndombele has a future at Spurs as he is not particularly good without the ball, which one has to be to get into Jose’s teams.
