Report: Mourinho said to be keen on signing central defender with £80m release clause

Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho is said to be keen on raiding his former club Benfica for centre half Ruben Dias as he attempts to rebuild the Spurs backline in the summer, according to a report by Football.London.

Dias was said to be on Tottenham’s radar ahead of the January transfer window (Independent) before the 22-year-old penned a new five-year deal with Benfica in December.

However, The Express reported back in February that the Portuguese international was still one of the defensive options which Spurs were examining as a summer target, despite his decision to commit his long-term future to the Primeira Liga side.

Football.London claim that Mourinho wants to bring his compatriot to North London despite the £80 million release clause in his new deal.

The report suggests that Mourinho’s relationship with Dias’ agent, Jorge Mendes, could work in Tottenham’s favour and that the Lilywhites are would look to wrap up a deal for just around £40 million.

Spurs Web Opinion

If we are able to land Dias for somewhere around £40m, that would be a terrific coup for the club but I suspect Benfica will look to play hardball and get a bidding war going for him. It is very hard to predict how the market will pan out due to the financial uncertainty facing clubs at the moment.
