Report: Mourinho makes Bundesliga defender a priority summer signing

According to Spanish news outlet Don Balon (as translated by TEAMtalk), Jose Mourinho has identified RB Leipzig central defender Dayot Upamecano as the club’s top defensive target in the summer.

Upamecano has been impressive for Leipzig over the past two seasons and has established himself as one of the best young defenders in the Bundesliga.

Recent reports have suggested that Spurs are in the market for a centre back in the summer as Jose Mourinho attempts to rebuild his backline (The Express).

The 21-year-old is one of a number of names to have been linked with a move to Spurs but the Lilywhites could be facing competition for the Frenchman with Chelsea also reported being keen on bringing him to the Premier League (the Mirror).

The defender hinted earlier this month that he might be on his way out of the Bundesliga outfit in the summer (Bild).

It looks like the Lilywhites are now set to make a major play for Upamecano with Mourinho believing that the centre half could reinvigorate the Tottenham defence.

As things stand, Tottenham are currently set to lose Jan Vertonghen at the end of the campaign when his current contract expires.

Spurs Web Opinion

Our backline certainly looks like it is in need of some serious repair in the summer. It is clear that neither Alderweireld nor Vertonghen are the players they once were and Tanganga doesn’t have the experience to be counted on as a starter for us at the moment. Upamecano might potentially be an excellent long-term partner for Davinson Sanchez.
