Report: Mourinho personally calls ‘flattered’ Spurs target to convince him to join

Jose Mourinho has personally called PSG defender, Thomas Meunier, in order to convince the defender to join Tottenham, according to a report in ESPN.

Meunier’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain runs out in the summer and the experienced defender has been linked with a move to Tottenham over the past few days.

Spanish publication Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness) reported on Friday that the PSG star was Tottenham bound and claimed that 28-year-old had ‘almost everything done’ with the North Londoners.

ESPN now reports that Mourinho had a long conversation with the Belgian international, who was left flattered by the Tottenham man’s call.

The report reveals that Meunier’s agent, Jacques Lichtenstein, knows Daniel Levy well and is also close to Pini Zahavi, who helped broker the deals to bring both Serge Aurier and Lucas Moura from PSG to Spurs.

However, the report suggests that the full-back’s move to Spurs is far from a done deal as Mourinho will have to convince Levy to push ahead with the transfer. The Tottenham chairman is said to be keen on bringing down the average age of the squad.

It is asserted that while Meunier would prefer to stay in Paris, the reigning Ligue 1 champions aren’t prepared to hand the defender a new contract.

I suspect we are only going for Meunier as the club view the opportunity to sign the defender on a free transfer as too good to turn down, especially given the financial constraints owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
