Report: Mourinho phoned player after hearing of Tottenham’s interest

According to a report in the print edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), Jose Mourinho phoned Lorenzo Pellegrini after learning of Tottenham’s interest in the midfielder.

The arrival of Paulo Fonseca at Tottenham now looks imminent and it has been rumoured (La Repubblica via The Sun) that the former Roma boss wants bring Pellegrini with him to North London.

The 24-year-old, who came through Roma’s youth academy, has just 12 months left to run on his contract and has a release clause of €30m.

Gazzetta Dello Sport have now also reported on Tottenham’s interest in the midfielder, suggesting that Fonseca considers Pellegrini to be ‘the best midfielder in Italy’.

Despite Tottenham’s interest, Roma are said to be hopeful that the Italy international will sign a contract extension that would remove his release clause.

Mourinho, who replaced Fonseca as Roma head coach, is said to have ‘called him to make him feel important’ amidst interest from Spurs.

The report adds that Pellegrini is expected to stay in Rome ‘with the exception of monster offers’.
