Report: Mourinho tells Roma to sign star linked to Spurs last year

The Sun have claimed that Jose Mourinho has asked AS Roma to secure a deal for Brighton defender Ben White, who has also been linked with a move to Tottenham in the past.

Spurs were rumoured to be one of the clubs who were after White’s signature during last summer’s transfer window but the centre-back stayed put at the Amex Stadium on the back of an exceptional season on loan in the Championship with Leeds United.

The 23-year-old has not looked out of place in the Premier League, having become a fixture in Graham Potter’s backline this campaign.

The Sun now report that White’s reputation has blossomed even further, with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain all said to be showing interest in the central defender.

While the report does not mention Tottenham as one of the clubs vying for the Brighton star’s signature, Mourinho’s Roma are named as one of the contenders.

However, it is explained that the Serie A giants are unlikely to pull off a deal for White, with the Seagulls valuing him in excess of £45m.

Spurs Web Opinion

Centre-back is arguably the most important position for us to strengthen this summer but I cannot see us spending upwards of £40m on any one player under the current financial constraints, which likely rules out a move for White.

I expect our strategy to be similar to the one we employed last summer i.e looking for market opportunities like players with 12 months left on their contracts. I see us going for options like Andersen or Vestergaard.
