Report: Mourinho wanted to bring 23-year-old Leicester flop to Spurs

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport, Jose Mourinho wanted to bring Cengiz Under to Tottenham Hotspur.

It looked like Leicester had managed to get a real coup when they signed Under from Roma last summer on a season-long loan deal, with an option to make his signing permanent for £18m.

The Turkish international had caught the attention of several of Europe’s heavy hitters during his first couple of seasons at the Stadio Olympico, with Tottenham being one of the clubs linked with the forward before he made his move to the King Power Stadium.

However, Under struggled to live up to expectations at Leicester and found himself out of Brendan Rodgers’ starting eleven for the majority of the campaign.

The Foxes have unsurprisingly decided against activating the option to sign the 23-year-old permanently, with Under now set to return to Roma, where he will work under Mourinho.

Gazzetta dello Sport claim that the Portuguese coach is very much a fan of the forward, having tried to bring him to North London.

The report quotes Under himself as saying that it would be a dream to work with the former Tottenham boss and adds that the 58-year-old is likely to value players like the Turk, who is ready to give everything for the cause.

If it is true that Mourinho wanted to bring Under to Spurs, it looks like we dodged a bullet with that deal considering how the 23-year-old struggled at Leicester. The forward is undoubtedly talented but he did not look particularly well suited to the Premier League.
