Report: Mourinho wants to bring 28-year-old PL centre-back to Spurs

According to a report from The Daily Mirror, Jose Mourinho wants to bring Southampton defender Jannick Vestergaard to Tottenham during the summer transfer window.

Central defence has been a problem area for Spurs this season, with Mourinho often chopping and changing the central defensive pairing before settling on Toby Aldrweireld and Davinson Sanchez as his first choice a few weeks ago.

The Daily Mirror reveal that a new centre-back is a priority for Spurs when the transfer market opens in the summer and Vestergaard’s name is high up on the list of potential targets.

The Dane has settled in well to Premier League football since joining the Saints from Borussia Moenchengladbach in 2018.

The 28-year-old, who is comfortable playing at either side of centre-back, has been one of the most consistent performers for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men this campaign.

The Mirror claim that, with the defender set to run into the final year of his contract at St Mary’s in the summer, Spurs hope to complete another bargain deal just like they did with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg last summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given that Spurs are unlikely to be in a position to spend big this summer due to the financial impact of COVID, I am not surprised that Vestergaard is one of the options the club are looking at.

While the Dane might not be one of the best defenders in a league, getting a player of his quality for under £20m would represent decent value for money as he would be a guaranteed starter for us.
