Report names Spurs as one of two front-runners for centre-back

According to a report from France Football, Tottenham Hotspur have expressed an interest in signing Lille defender Sven Botman during the summer transfer window.

Jose Mourinho is seemingly yet to settle on his first-choice centre-back pairing, with all of Tottenham’s centre-halves having been guilty of some poor mistakes and sub-par performances this season.

Reports in January indicated that Mourinho was keen on landing a central defender and that is again likely to be one of the priorities for the North Londoners in the summer.

Botman, who has already earned rave reviews since moving to Lille last summer, was one of the defenders who was mentioned as a target for Spurs in January.

Duncan Castles revealed in The Transfer Window Podcast (as relayed by The Express) that Mourinho views the 21-year-old as the ideal fit for the left-sided centre-back role.

France Football have now claimed that Tottenham have joined Liverpool in the race for the Lille star.

However, the report denies rumours that Botman has already agreed on a move away from the Stade Pierre Mauroy in the summer, with the former Ajax man said to be focused on finishing the season strongly with Lille.

Spurs Web Opinion

Botman looks extremely composed and mature for his age but like Rodon, he will be a signing for the future rather than someone who can transform our defence straight away. I believe Mourinho will be keen on snapping up an experienced campaigner like Skriniar to serve as a leader at the back.
