The Athletic have now asserted that the Lilywhites’ recruitment staff have been engaging in succession planning for the past 12 months, in case the 30-year-old left.

The report states that the club agreed it was best not to try and replace the England captain with one big-name striker but instead bring in multiple forwards to give options to Postecoglou, who wants a full front line.

However, it is explained that Spurs still explored moves for some high-profile forwards, including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, who proved out of reach owing to the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.

The outlet adds that Tottenham also considered a move for Hojlund prior to his switch to Old Trafford while they also explored a deal for Ferguson before he signed a five-year deal at Brighton.

The fee that Hojlund fetched this summer despite not being the finished product yet, shows how inflated the market is for number nines.

So replacing Kane will prove extremely difficult for Spurs, particularly given that clubs are now aware that the North London side have plenty of money to spend.
