Report names two of the ‘remaining candidates’ for Tottenham manager role

The search for the next Tottenham Hotspur manager is now seemingly down to two names, with Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique thought to be leading the way.

Tottenham parted ways with Antonio Conte at the end of last month after 16 months in charge, installing his former assistant Cristian Stellini in his place as interim manager.

Stellini’s reign didn’t last long, though. After disappointing draws against relegation battlers Everton and Southampton, and a win against Brighton, Spurs were crushed 6-1 by Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon and Stellini subsequently lost his job.

Ryan Mason is now Acting Head Coach until the end of the campaign, at which point a new permanent manager is expected to be appointed.

Luis Enrique has long been linked with the Tottenham job, and was reportedly flying to London to hold talks with the Spurs hierarchy about the role (Telegraph).

According to 90Min, there had been ‘positive discussions’ between the two parties already.

Various reports have also linked Julian Nagelsmann with the position, and journalist Pedro Almeida claimed yesterday that an agreement between the German and Spurs was close.

Now, the latest from The Athletic suggests the search has been narrowed down and the two highly-rated coaches are in the running.

The report claims Tottenham are keen to find “their next [Mauricio] Pochettino.” However, Spurs are “yet to make a breakthrough” in their search.

Nevertheless, progress is seemingly being made, with Enrique and Nagelsmann now “among the remaining candidates.”

There is no mention of any other contenders in the report.

If we got either of these managers, I would be pretty happy. Nagelsmann would probably have the edge for me, simply because he has more recent experience at club level.

But Enrique is clearly a top manager, too. I just hope whoever gets the job will be backed by the board to make the necessary changes in the squad.
