Report: New deal at Spurs could lay groundwork for potential club takeover

The Times have revealed that the partnership between Formula 1 and Tottenham Hotspur might pave the way for a potential takeover of the North London club by Liberty Media.

Spurs announced yesterday that they have reached a 15-year strategic partnership with Formula 1 that will include the production of the world’s first in-stadium electric karting track.

The club confirmed that the electric karting facility and London’s longest indoor track will be based below the South Stand of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Times has now clarified that Liberty Media is to build the karting track as part of the tie-up with Spurs.

The aim is also to create apprenticeships and career opportunities for young people in order to bring greater diversity to the motorsport industry, F1 legend Lewis Hamilton has previously been vocally pushing for. (Independent).

The report adds that the American media giant, which is valued at £17.5 billion, could be exploring the possibility of adding a Premier League club to its sporting portfolio, and could look at this move as the first step in a potential takeover of Spurs.

Liberty Media own Major League Baseball team, Atlanta Braves and acquired F1 back in 2017.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy told the club’s official website yesterday after the deal was confirmed: “Since building this stadium our ambition has always been to see how far we can push the boundaries in delivering world-class experiences that will attract people from around the world all year round.

“We have been able to bring the biggest names in sport and entertainment to London N17. We are extremely excited about what this long-term partnership with F1 will bring for our global, national and local communities.”

The club also insisted that attracting such recurring sources of revenue is a key part of the club’s financial aims to generate money to put back into the footballing aspect of the business.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Liberty Media are indeed considering adding a Premier League club to its portfolio, laying the groundwork for the deal with this kind of partnership would make a lot of strategic sense for the company. Time will tell if the media giants show interest in investing in Spurs.

Tottenham have already brought other sporting events to their new stadium outside of football with high-profile boxing fights, regular NFL games, rugby matches and other shows to boost the club’s finances including music concerts.
