Report: New Premier League ‘big six’ club enters the race for Willian free transfer

Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of signing Willian in the summer could soon be dealt a massive blow, with reports from Spain claiming that the Chelsea star is in negotiations with Liverpool over a deal.

Willian’s contract with Chelsea runs out in the summer, and Tottenham had been established as the favourites to land him once he becomes a free agent (Mundo Deportivo).

Football Insider even claimed that Daniel Levy was prepared to move early to hand the winger a new contract with a bumper pay rise.

However, if the report in today’s edition of Sport is to be believed (as relayed by Sport Witness), then the Lilywhites may not have been quick enough as Willian is already said to be in talks with Liverpool over a deal.

The report asserts that the Reds have offered the Chelsea star ‘very favourable conditions’, which implies that Willian will be handed the contract he was looking for at Anfield.

I can certainly see this happening as Willian would be a useful squad option for Liverpool due to his ability to cover for both Salah and Mane. The fact that the Reds have moved for Willian rather than someone like Sancho shows how cash-strapped clubs are and how highly valued free agents will be in the current climate.
