Report: New Spurs employee was interested in Bissouma and Spence in the past

The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham’s new appointee Gretar Steinsson previously wanted to sign both Yves Bissouma and Djed Spence when he was at Everton.

It emerged earlier this month that Steinsson, who was working as Everton’s head of recruitment, was set to join Tottenham as the club’s new performance director.

The Athletic have now explained that the 40-year-old will directly report to Spurs’ managing director of football Fabio Paratici and he will be involved in many different areas like scouting, recruitment and sports science.

The report adds that Steinsson is known for his ‘honestly, straightforwardness and his utter contempt for bulls**t’.

The Athletic reveal that the former Bolton right-back shares several beliefs with Paratici and Antonio Conte, including on the importance of signing Premier League-ready players.

Steinsson is alleged to have shown interest in both Bissouma and Spence in the past.

According to reports, the Boro youngster is Tottenham’s top target for the right-wing-back role this summer (Sky Sports).

It sounds like Steinsson’s characteristics as a director are quite similar to his attributes as a player as he was quite a no-nonsense defender, who kept things simple on the pitch and was quite consistent.

Despite the flak that Steve Hitchen got from the Spurs fan base, his shoes will be big ones to fill, and it sounds like in Steinsson, Tottenham have found someone capable of doing that.
