Report: New Spurs player didn’t know he was signing when he travelled to London

Tottenham Hotspur broke their all-time club transfer record yesterday as they signed Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for a reported £53.8m, which could rise to £62.8m after add-ons (BBC).

Ndombele is likely seen as the long-term replacement for Mousa Dembele, who left North London for the Chinese Super League back in January of this year.

However, despite Spurs pulling off their dream buy yesterday, it appears that Ndombele himself had no idea he would be signing when he first flew to London.

L’Equipe report that Ndombele travelled to the capital knowing that Tottenham was his preferred destination this summer after talks with Pochettino, but he did not suspect to sign so soon.

The report suggests that Tanguy was looking for validation that he had made the right choice, without an immediate signature necessarily being on the cards.

He even embarked to the Spurs training ground without taking any specific clothes in which to take his welcome photos in.

Thanks to the persuasive nature of Daniel Levy and Pochettino, Tottenham landed their man earlier than expected.
