Report: Newcastle and Everton could challenge Spurs for Championship teenager

TEAMtalk have now revealed that Newcastle United and Everton are set to battle Tottenham for Blackburn Rovers sensation Adam Wharton.

While Conor Gallagher has long been mooted as Tottenham’s top midfield target this month (Telegraph), over the last two weeks, an increasing number of outlets have played down Spurs’ chances of landing the 23-year-old, who is thought to be determined to remain at Chelsea (The Sun).

Dean Jones is one of several reporters who have suggested over recent days that Tottenham may turn their attention to Wharton if their pursuit of the England international falls through (SportsLens).

However, Ben Jacobs told The Spurs Chat Podcast last week that as things stand, it is Crystal Palace who are at the front of the queue to land the 19-year-old ahead of Spurs.

Competition intensifies for Adam Wharton

TEAMtalk have now also backed Spurs to pursue a deal for Wharton should Gallagher prove to be out of their reach.

However, they say that Palace are not Tottenham’s only competitor, with the Blackburn starlet alleged to have caught the attention of several other top-flight clubs.

The report says that the Toffees and the Magpies are also circling the teenager and it is revealed that while Rovers would prefer to keep hold of the midfielder until next summer, they might not be able to turn down a sizable offer right now.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Adam Wharton is a homegrown option and likely to be fairly cheap, Arthur Vermeeren would be the much more exciting signing if Tottenham miss out on Gallagher. It is anybody’s guess at the moment what Spurs are plotting in the next nine days for the central midfield role.
