Report: Newcastle and Leicester show interest in Christian Eriksen

According to The Times, Newcastle United and Leicester City have joined the race to sign former Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen.

Eriksen has not played competitively since suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening fixture of Euro 2020 last June, and later, the midfielder had an ICD device fitted (ITV).

Since Italian regulations do not allow players to continue playing professionally with such a device, the former Spurs man terminated his contract with Inter Milan last month.

The Athletic revealed on Monday that Brentford are keen on bringing the Dane back to the Premier League and had offered him a six-month contract.

The Times have now also backed up that claim, explaining that the Bees have been in talks with Eriksen over the past six months regarding a move.

The report adds that the former Spurs man has a good relationship with Brentford boss Thomas Frank, who worked with Eriksen in the Denmark Under-17 set up previously.

Frank, however, insisted that he has been left flattered by reports linking his club with a move to Eriksen and insisted he has not spoken to the Dane (Independent).

In addition, it is said that Newcastle and Leicester have also shown an interest in signing the former Inter Milan man.

However, as things stand, a return to Tottenham is not expected to be on the cards for the 29-year-old.

Spurs Web Opinion

Some Spurs fans might be desperate for Eriksen to come back but I suspect that might be motivated by emotion and nostalgia rather than clear thinking.

It is worth remembering that Eriksen struggled in his last year at Spurs and it took him nearly 12 months to win a place in Conte’s starting eleven at Inter.

I am not surprised that Conte is not particularly keen on bringing the 29-year-old to Tottenham, particularly considering the additional health risks it could involve.
