Report: Newcastle could be set to rival Spurs for Premier League winger

The Telegraph claim that that Newcastle United have emerged as contenders for Leicester City winger Demarai Gray.

Gray has failed to hit the heights expected when he first broke into the Leicester side following his transfer from Birmingham City back in 2016.

The winger has seemingly fallen behind the likes of Harvey Barnes, Ayoze Perez and Marc Albrighton in the Foxes pecking order with Brendan Rodgers seemingly content to use him as an impact substitute.

The Times reported last month that Tottenham had set their sights on bringing the England Under-21 international to North London this summer.

It was claimed that Spurs could look to strike a cut-price deal for the 24-year-old who only has a year left to run on his contract with the Foxes.

The Telegraph now claim that Newcastle are set to step up their efforts to bring Gray to St James’ Park.

Steve Bruce is reportedly a fan of the winger and wants to bring him to the club, however Gray is said to be not ruling out the prospect of running his contract down before exploring his options as a free agent when his contract expires.

Spurs Web Opinion

I can understand why Spurs fans would be puzzled about our rumoured interest in Gray, seeing as he is struggling to get into the Leicester side. However, the wide man could potentially be a very good option for us as he is effective as an impact substitute. Given that Gray has been rumoured to be on our radar for a long time and transfer funds are hard to come by this summer, I would not be surprised if we tried to sign the Leicester man on a cut-price deal.
