Report: Newcastle could be without six players for trip to Tottenham

Eddie Howe has admitted that Joelinton is a doubt for Newcastle’s trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Spurs were riding high going into the game at Old Trafford on Wednesday but they were humbled by Manchester United, who brushed Antonio Conte’s men aside.

The Lilywhites will be looking to put that performance behind them and return to winning ways against the Magpies, who currently sit in sixth place in the Premier League table.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that Newcastle will be without one of their key attackers in the form of Allan Saint-Maximin, who is continuing to recover from a hamstring injury.

Howe has now confirmed that Joelinton is also a major doubt for the clash against Spurs after the Brazilian came off at half-time with a knee problem in their midweek win over Everton.

The Newcastle boss said (via The Evening Standard): “He (Joelinton) had a knock to the side of his knee, it was quite an unusual one as we thought he could run it off,” he told reporters.

“Joe is a lad that is very, very mentally strong and has played with lots of different things in my time here. But when he said he had to come off at half-time we knew there was potentially an issue there.

“We’re hopeful it’s not serious but at this moment it’s still slightly unclear.”

The Magpies are still without Alexander Isak, Karl Darlow, Matt Ritchie and Emil Krafth but The Evening Standard revealed that Jonjo Shelvey could make the bench against Spurs after summer surgery on a hamstring issue.

Joelinton has been a revelation for Newcastle since being moved into midfield and there is no doubt that the Magpies will be much less threatening without him and Saint-Maximin.

Having said that, they have shown to be difficult to break down this season and so, Spurs need their attacking players to be on song to come away with all three points.
