Report: Newcastle could walk away from alleged Spurs target Sven Botman

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United could be about to walk away from a deal for Sven Botman, who is also rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar, after Lille raised their asking price for the centre-back.

Botman is thought to be one of the names on Tottenham’s wishlist for the left-sided centre-back role, with the club expected to spend big to strengthen that area this summer (The Athletic).

AC Milan were initially reported to be leading the race for the 22-year-old (TMW) but it subsequently emerged that the Serie A club were having difficulties agreeing on a fee with Lille (Manuele Baiocchini).

Sky Italia (as relayed by The Sun) claimed a couple of days ago that Milan were set to pull out of the race for the centre-back, with the Magpies alleged to be the front-runners for the player’s signature.

However, The Telegraph have now claimed that Newcastle have been left frustrated with Lille after the Ligue 1 club raised their asking price for Bortman from £30m to £36m.

It is explained that Eddie Howe’s side thought they had a deal for the Netherlands international agreed last week, only for Lille to move the goalposts.

The report asserts that the Magpies will make one final ‘take it or leave it’ offer for Botman and are prepared to walk away from the deal if the French club do not accept it.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Newcastle walk away from the deal, I do not expect Spurs to take advantage. I believe Botman will be a fair way down Conte’s wishlist for the left-sided centre-back role as the Dutchman is better suited to playing in a back four than a back three.
