Report: Newcastle enter race for Tottenham centre-back

According to US news outlet SBI Soccer, Newcastle United are interested in a move for Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Carter-Vickers has had an impressive season on loan at Celtic and reports have indicated that the Scottish giants are now working to activate the option to sign the defender on a permanent basis for a fee of around £6m (The Daily Record).

90min reported last month that the Spurs academy graduate was also attracting interest from the Premier League, with Southampton and Fulham wanting the player while West Ham, Crystal Palace, Wolves and Everton were monitoring his situation.

According to SBI Soccer‘s update, Newcastle have also joined the race for Carter-Vickers, with the club said to be ‘ready to pounce’ if Celtic are not able to strike a deal.

It is explained that the Magpies also showed an interest in the USA international last summer before he eventually joined Celtic on loan.

During his loan spell at Bournemouth, Carter-Vickers has previously played Jason Tindall, who is now Eddie Howe’s assistant at St James’ Park.

If it is true that so many Premier League clubs are showing interest, I would expect Carter-Vickers’ head to be turned.

However, the last thing the centre-back needs is to have a season or two of warming the bench at Newcastle, Everton or West Ham.

Perhaps, he might feel that the best thing for his career is to get a year or two of regular football under his belt at Celtic before making a big move.
