Report: Newcastle enter race for winger said to have ‘impressed’ Spurs scouts

Portuguese outlet A Bola have claimed that Newcastle United have entered the race for Porto winger Luiz Diaz, who is on Tottenham’s radar ahead of January.

Diaz was the standout player for Colombia in the Copa America this summer, scoring four goals in five matches in the competition.

Tottenham were credited with an interest in the 25-year-old during the summer transfer window but the winger ended up staying put at the Estadio do Dragao.

The 24-year-old had a sensational start to the new campaign, with his match-winner against AC Milan in Tuesday’s Champions League encounter taking his tally to 7 goals in 11 matches.

O Jogo (as relayed by Sport Witness) revealed earlier this week that scouts from Tottenham were in attendance to watch Diaz against Milan.

A Bola have now backed up that information, stating that the Spurs scouts were ‘very impressed’ with the Porto star on Tuesday.

However, the report adds that the North London club now face competition from Newcastle for Diaz after the Magpies’ Saudi-led takeover.

It is asserted that Newcastle could make the Colombian their first signing of the new regime when the transfer window reopens in January.

Spurs Web Opinion

There are no guarantees that success in Portuguese football would translate to the Premier League. However, with each passing game that Diaz features in for both club and country, not pushing the boat to get him in the summer is looking like a bigger and bigger mistake.
