Report: Newcastle hold a ‘strong’ interest in 23-year-old Spurs-linked star

Italian publication Radio Radio claim that Newcastle United have been on the trail of rumoured Tottenham target Nicolo Zaniolo for a ‘few months’.

Tottenham’s pursuit of Zaniolo in the summer was well documented, with Gianluca Di Marzio explaining to Wettfreunde in November that the London club were unable to conclude a deal for the winger since they were exploring a part-exchange offer while Roma preferred a straight cash deal.

Italian agent Massimo Brambati remarked just last week that Spurs came ‘close’ to completing a deal for the 23-year-old, revealing that the Lilywhites met with the winger and his father back in August to discuss a transfer (TuttoMercatoWeb).

It remains to be seen whether Antonio Conte’s men will reignite their interest in Zaniolo but according to Radio Radio’s latest update, they might have to deal with competition from Premier League rivals if they do so.

The publication states that Manchester United explored a move for the Italy international but they deemed Roma’s asking price to be ‘excessive’.

However, it is suggested that Newcastle hold a ‘strong’ interest in Zaniolo and that the Magpies might be willing to meet the Giallorossi’s demands, given their financial strength.

Radio Radio also add that the prospect of the attacker renewing his current contract at the Stadio Olimpico is now becoming ‘increasingly distant’.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do have a sneaky suspicion that Zaniolo would be Tottenham’s top attacking target during January as the Italian fits the profile of player we need and is admired by both Conte and Paratici.

The fact that he is only 23 years of age, would also potentially make him an attractive option for the Spurs hierarchy. However, the main concern is his injury record, which could make it a risky acquisition, especially given the injury concerns surrounding our other forwards.
