Report: Newcastle hold the ‘most concrete interest’ in Tottenham target

According to 90Min, Newcastle United are now leading the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram, despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Thuram has scored 13 goals and provided four assists in 17 games for the German side so far this season (Transfermarkt) and is fresh off the back of a World Cup campaign with France.

The 25-year-old registered two assists for France on their way to the World Cup final, and even set up Kylian Mbappe for his second goal in that final itself (Transfermarkt).

With his contract expiring at the end of the season (Transfermarkt), Thuram’s future is up in the air. It has been reported by Nicolo Schira that Gladbach would allow the player to leave for €10m (£8.6m) in January, while Sport Bild have claimed an offer of as little as €7m (£6m) could do the job.

Spurs were previously linked with Thuram (90Min), but Newcastle United have since emerged as a suitor for the player too according to The Athletic.

Now, 90Min understands the Magpies may just be the leaders of the pack when it comes to the hunt for Thuram’s signature, but they face competition from Inter Milan.

Apparently, “Inter have prepared a pre-contract offer”, and sources suggest “a move to Italy does appeal to [Thuram].” However, it is believed “the most concrete interest is emerging from Newcastle.”

Newcastle star Allan Saint-Maximin has even recommended Thuram to his club, saying: “He is a great player and I hope we have a chance to take him here. Yeah, I will be honest, I have chatted with him.”

Manager Eddie Howe added: “He [Thuram] is a top player. He’s one that I watched in the World Cup for sure but no more than that.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It sounds like the race to sign Thuram is heating up, and Spurs may well be left behind on this one. That said, I’m not entirely sure quite how interested we are in the player, and there are plenty of options out there who we can turn to in order to add to our attacking options who may be a better fit.
