Report: Newcastle holding internal talks over possible move for Spurs target

The Athletic have revealed that Newcastle United have held discussions internally regarding a potential move for Tottenham target Marcus Thuram in January.

Thuram was one of the best attackers in German football in the first part of the 2022-23 campaign, with 13 goals and four assists to his name for Borussia Monchengladbach this season (Transfermarkt).

The 25-year-old, who has made two substitute appearances in the World Cup for France, has been the subject of much speculation over recent weeks since his contract at Borussia Park runs out in the summer.

Nicolo Schira reported two weeks ago that Daniel Farke’s men would consider selling Thuram for just €10m (£8.6m) in January, due to his contract situation while Sport Bild claimed a couple of days ago that the attacker could be available for as little as €7m (£6m).

Multiple publications over the last month (90 min and Gazzetta via Sport Witness) have mentioned Spurs as a potential destination for Thuram in January but over the last couple of weeks, Thuram has also emerged as a target for Newcastle United.

The Sun were the first to report that the Magpies could make a move for the Gladbach star while GiveMeSport subsequently revealed that the Frenchman had been offered to Eddie Howe’s side.

The Athletic have now explained that Newcastle are intent on signing a versatile forward in January and Thuram fits the profile of player that the club are after.

The report adds that the Magpies hierarchy have held internal talks over a possible move for the forward, particularly due to his contract situation.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Thuram does end up coming to the Premier League, I suspect Newcastle would be his likely destination. Not only can the Magpies offer him high wages but he would also be much more likely to get regular game time at St James Park than he would at the likes of Spurs or Arsenal.
