Report: Newcastle interested in Spurs man who was recently praised by Conte

The Telegraph have reported that Newcastle United hold an interest in signing Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks in January.

Winks has started just one match since Antonio Conte arrived in North London at the start of last month – the 2-1 win over Leeds.

The 25-year-old came into the starting line-up for Oliver Skipp, who was suspended for that clash, and following a poor first-half performance, the midfielder gave a much better account of himself in the second half, helping Spurs to turn the result around.

Speaking after the win over Leeds, Conte commended the ‘personality’ that Winks showed in the second half after struggling in the first 45 minutes.

Fabrizio Romano even said on last week’s episode of the Here We Go Podcast (starting at 14:19) that the Spurs academy graduate is loving life under Conte.

However, if the Telegraph are to be believed, Winks could be on his way out of the club in January, with Newcastle thought to be interested.

The report reveals that the Spurs star is one of the names that the Magpies hierarchy have ‘discussed’ ahead of the January transfer window.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is too early to suggest that Winks does not have a future under Conte. The 25-year-old seems to be above both Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso in the Italian’s pecking order.

However, I would expect the club to be in the market for a midfielder in January, which would only make it more difficult for Winks to get game time. I think the England international is more likely to leave next summer than he is in January.
