Report: Newcastle leading race to sign Spurs man on loan – Leeds also interested

The Telegraph have revealed that Newcastle United are now leading the race to sign Joe Rodon on loan from Tottenham in January.

Rodon’s only start under Antonio Conte came in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to NS Mura in the Europa Conference League last month.

The centre-back did not cover himself in glory in that match and was replaced just 54 minutes into the encounter.

Conte has admitted that he sees the Wales international as cover for Eric Dier in the central sweeper role in his back three.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold previously revealed that the former Swansea man is keen to go out on loan in January to get regular game time under his belt.

According to The Telegraph, Spurs are now ‘likely’ to allow Rodon to leave on a short-term deal next month in order to get game time.

Newcastle are said to be the front-runners for the Tottenham man’s signature, with Eddie Howe thought to be prioritising strengthening the Magpies backline.

The report further adds that Brighton could move for the centre-back given that Graham Potter worked with him at Swansea, while Watford and Leeds are also alleged to be watching Rodon’s situation.

Spurs Web Opinion

Loaning Rodon out would be the right move as the 24-year-old needs opportunities to show that he can perform consistently in the Premier League. However, with Romero out injured, I doubt Spurs would be willing to loan out the Welshman unless they bring in another centre-back in January.
