Report: Newcastle look to beat Tottenham to the signing of experienced free agent

Newcastle United are now ready to battle Tottenham for the signing of Chelsea star, Willian, this summer according to a report in Football Insider.

Willian’s contract with Chelsea runs out at the end of the season and the 31-year-old has confirmed that talks over a new deal with the Blues have hit a dead-end (Gazeta Esportiva).

Spurs were said to be leading the race to sign Brazilian if he was to become a free agent in the summer, with Jose Mourinho reportedly keen on reuniting with him in North London (Mundo Deportivo).

However, Football Insider now claim that Newcastle United will challenge Tottenham in their quest to sign the former Anzhi Makhachkala player.

Amanda Staveley’s PCP Partners and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) have reportedly agreed a £300 million deal to buy Newcastle United from Mike Ashley (Sky Sports).

It is said that Newcastle’s new owners are keen on recruiting big names who can make an instant impact and have identified Willian as one of their targets.

The report claims that the Magpies can now offer the Brazilian a bumper contract in order to convince him to come to the North East.

With backing from their new owners, Newcastle can now blow us out of the water in terms of the wages that they can offer Willian. However, we still may hold an advantage in the deal as we would offer the Brazilian a chance to remain in London, while his relationship with Jose Mourinho could also work to our advantage.
