Report: Newcastle make enquiry for Real Madrid star linked with Spurs

According to Cuatro, Newcastle United are one of the clubs to have made an approach for Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio, who is rumoured to be a target for Tottenham.

It was reported ahead of the January transfer window that Asensio was on Spurs’ radar, with Madrid allegedly valuing him at around £43m (Daily Express).

The winger ended up staying put at the Santiago Bernabeu but there continues to be uncertainty over his long-term future, with his current contract at Madrid running only until 2023 (Transfermarkt).

The print edition of the Sunday Mirror (10/04/22, p.73) subsequently stated that Spurs had been offered the chance to sign the wide-man this summer.

Cuatro have now revealed that Real Madrid have made it clear to Asensio that they would not be prepared to give him a pay rise over his current salary.

It is alleged that the winger’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is now looking for potential suitors, with clubs from Italy and England said to have shown interest in the 26-year-old.

Cuatro do not mention Spurs but they claim that Newcastle and Juventus have both asked about the Real Madrid star’s availability.

However, it is asserted that AC Milan are currently the front-runner for Asensio’s signature, with the Rossoneri allegedly ready to meet the Spain international’s salary demands.

Spurs Web Opinion

We do not really need a player of Asensio’s profile unless Conte is potentially thinking about converting the Spaniard into a left wing-back. If Asencio does leave Madrid, I suspect he will probably end up in the Serie A rather than moving to the Premier League.
