Report: Newcastle make former Spurs defender their number one target

Newcastle United have made former Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier their number one target in January, The Telegraph have revealed.

Trippier was a great servant for Spurs, being a part of Mauricio Pochetitno’s revolution at the club after joining from Burnley in the summer of 2015.

The right-back had a dip in his performance levels during the 2018/19 season, with Spurs deciding to sell him to Atletico Madrid for £21.7m at the end of that campaign.

The England international subsequently opened up on his struggles during his final year at North London, admitting that he played through an injury.

Trippier has rebuilt his reputation at Atletico, playing a key part in Diego Simeone’s side’s march to the La Liga title last campaign.

The Telegraph have now revealed the former Spurs right-back could be set to return to the Premier League, with Newcastle set to prioritise a move for him.

The report explains that Eddie Howe is keen on reuniting with the 31-year-old, who he previously worked with at Burnley.

It is asserted that agreeing on personal terms with Trippier is expected to be straightforward once the Magpies agree on a fee with Atletico.

Spurs Web Opinion

In hindsight, Spurs certainly made a mistake letting Trippier go and losing him arguably hurt us more than losing Kyle Walker. We never managed to replace the England man and he would have certainly been a natural fit for Conte’s system.

I would certainly not mind Spurs putting in a bid for Trippier as he would be an upgrade over Doherty and offer Emerson some genuine competition for his place in the side. However, the Atletico man’s age might put off Tottenham as Paratici and Conte go about rebuilding the squad.
