Report: Newcastle make late attempt to beat Everton to Spurs’ Dele Alli

Newcastle have made a late attempt to beat Everton to the signing of Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli, according to The Athletic.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed earlier on deadline day that Spurs agreed a permanent deal to sell Alli to the Toffees, having fallen out of contention in North London.

However, The Athletic reports there could be a twist in the move, with Newcastle planning to make a late attempt to steal the 25-year-old from under Everton’s noses.

The report states the Magpies are keen on signing Alli on a loan deal after seeing their attempts to sign Jesse Lingard from Manchester United repeatedly knocked back (Sky Sports).

It adds that Everton are in the latter stages of finalising a permanent transfer from Spurs and it is ‘unclear’ if Newcastle’s late effort will succeed, according to David Ornstein.

A move would see Alli leave Spurs after a six-and-a-half-year period, which yielded 67 goals in 269 appearances (Transfermarkt) as well as two PFA Young Player of the Year awards.

An exit from Spurs for Alli really should have happened a season or two ago, and it finally looks to be coming to fruition this evening. Spurs ideally need to receive a fee for him so the move to Everton will definitely be a priority over Newcastle’s offer.
