Report: Newcastle make Spurs-linked PL star number one target for January

The Northern Echo have claimed that signing Tottenham target James Maddison is now Newcastle United’s number-one priority in January.

Maddison forced himself into England’s World Cup squad with his brilliant displays for Leicester City in the first part of the season.

The attacking midfielder, who has 11 goal contributions in 13 Premier League appearances this campaign, looks ready to make the step up to a top club and his days at King Power Stadium could be numbered, with his current contract running until 2024 (Transfermarkt).

Spurs are one of the clubs alleged to be eyeing a move for Maddison ahead of the January transfer window (GiveMeSport), with Football Insider even claiming back in September that the 25-year-old would ‘jump at the chance’ to join the North London club.

According to The Northern Echo’s latest update, Antonio Conte’s men could now face competition from Newcastle for the England international’s signature. The report asserts that the Leicester star is now at the top of the Magpies’ wanted list in January.

However, is explained that Newcastle will have to work around the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play regulations, which will limit the amount they can spend on transfers and wages.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not see Tottenham meeting Leicester’s asking price for Maddison, which is likely to be in the region of £50m or above. The 25-year-old would not be a regular starter for Spurs as he does not fit into Conte’s preferred 3-4-3 formation.

I believe that the North London club are likely to go after a cheaper option like Weston McKennie or Ruslan Malinovskyi, who can be used as squad players.
