Report: Newcastle now in ‘pole position’ to sign Ndombele from Spurs

Newcastle United have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Spurs midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, with the North London club expecting a fee of at least €50 million (£42.2 million), according to Media Foot (via Sport Witness).

Tottenham Hotspur have been attempting to offload the Frenchman all summer, after Antonio Conte made it clear Ndombele was not part of his plans and left him out of the pre-season trip to South Korea (Evening Standard).

It is believed that Ndombele himself prefers a move to either La Liga or Serie A, though up until last week, Marseille and Galatasary were looking to be the more likely options (Sky Sports via Football Daily).

More recently, however, Sky Sports’ live transfer blog (at 9:53) claimed Spanish side Villarreal had stepped up their interest in completing a double swoop for both Ndombele and fellow Spurs midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.

While the La Liga side are ‘still pushing’ to make that deal happen, according to Media Foot, it now appears Premier League side Newcastle United are in pole position to secure Ndombele’s signature.

Apparently, the Magpies are ‘the hottest’ on Ndombele and Spurs are keen to see offers of at least €50 million (£42.2m), which would go some way to recovering a large chunk of the record-breaking transfer fee they paid for Ndombele back in 2019 (Transfermarkt).

While it would be preferable for Ndombele to move abroad, to minimise the chances of him coming back to bite Spurs, but if there was a chance of bringing in over £40 million for his services, Levy and co would jump at it. Frankly, this saga has gone on long enough, and we’re sure most would just be happy to see the back of Ndombele at this point, wherever he may end up.
